How To Set Up Spy Cameras

Spy cameras are essential security surveillance equipment for any security professional, homeowner, or business place. To use them effectively, here’s how to set up spy cameras at home or at work.

Setting up spy cameras differs from your traditional security camera since it involves more strategic placement and angles to keep it concealed.

Don’t know how to set up a spy camera? Our guide below will take you through everything you need to know.

Understanding GDPR Before Setting Up a Spy Camera

Before you set up a spy camera you need to understand the legal side of surveillance in the UK and Germany, especially if you are choosing a camera that has audio recording.

GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) is a law protecting the collection of personal data which regulates the collection of audio and video too.

You must obtain consent before recording, only use encrypted storage solutions or GDPR compliant cloud storage, limit access and only retain data for as long as necessary.

Spy Cameras Set Up Guide (How To Hide a Spy Camera)

Spy cameras are relatively easy to set up just like a regular camera, you will need an SD card and the battery should be fully charged if you have a wireless model.

You may also need to follow the connectivity steps that come with your camera if you are using the device with a mobile app.

When setting up a spy camera, follow these steps.

How To Set Up Spy Cameras

Find The Right Locations

Where you place your spy camera will be different according to the environment and what you want to monitor –

  • Home – Entryways, near safes, the living room, or a baby monitor in a nursery are ideal places.
  • Workplace – Near cash registers, meeting rooms, desks, and entryways.
  • Personal – In pens, shirt buttons, or glasses.
  • Outdoors – In plants, furniture, or rocks.

Consider The Type Of Camera

Different hidden cameras suit different locations. For example, wireless cameras can be placed anywhere, but you must consider the Wi-Fi connection. For wired cameras, they must be hidden discreetly due to the visible wire and plug, for example, in an appliance that’s not used.

How To Set up a Spy Camera

  • Step One – Charge your spy camera till full or plug in the mini cam if you have a wired version.
  • Step Two – Insert your SD card, we recommend no less than 128GB memory or set up cloud storage if applicable.
  • Step Three – Connect to your Wi-Fi network for remote live streaming or use 4G LTE when without Wi-Fi.
  • Step Four – Adjust your hidden camera angle to get the view you need and test your footage to ensure it’s recording correctly. Make sure you have motion detection enabled.

How Do Hidden Cameras Work?

Hidden cameras are the same as any other recording device, except they are designed to be tiny, making them less detectable.

They vary in shape and size and can come disguised as button cameras to tree stumps. The majority offer live streaming to an app on your phone but you can use them with SD cards.

They are used in law enforcement, home security, and workplace surveillance.

Can You Use a Mobile Phone with a Spy Camera?

Most spy cameras have WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, therefore, can connect to your phone via an app where you will be able to watch the live feed, playback footage and adjust the view/settings.

You could also use your phone as a spy camera but a mobile phone isn’t designed to capture discreetly, defeating the purpose of a miniature camera.

How To Find Hidden Cameras With Your Phone?

If you are wondering if people will be able to detect your spy camera with their phone, or if you want to detect hidden cameras yourself with your phone, there are some ways you can use your phone to find them.

  • Camera lens reflection – You can turn the lights off in a room and use the camera flash to scan the room. Spy camera lenses will reflect light and show a small glowing dot.
  • RF signal detection – Wireless spy cameras often have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth which emit signals that can be detected by phone apps.
  • Infrared detection – Some hidden cams use IR for night vision, these have small blinking red lights picked up by phone cameras.
  • Check for networks – See if there are unknown connected devices on your Wi-Fi settings.

Tips On How To Use Spy Cameras

  • Keep your camera secure – Use strong passwords, enable encryption on any cloud data, and avoid using your spy cam with public networks.
  • Regularly check the battery and storage – Make sure loop recording is on and check available storage on your SD card cameras often. Also, make sure you have backup batteries if you have a wireless model. We have an option to upgrade and buy an extra battery with our wireless spy cam.
  • Use them legally – Make sure you check your local laws on using spy cams, some may require consent from the people being filmed, especially in the workplace. Never use spy cams in private places like bathrooms.
  • Backup – Transfer any important footage regularly to external hard drives in case of data loss, and do automatic backups if your recordings are in the cloud.
  • Keep them discreet – Avoid obvious placements for your mini camera and hide them in everyday objects. You can buy our already camouflage spy cams here
  • Maintain your spy cam – Keep your lenses clean and the spy cam dry. Check for any firmware updates to keep it running smoothly.

Troubleshooting Your Spy Camera – What To Do If Your Spy Camera Stops Working

If your spy camera has stopped working the main cause is likely the battery. You’ll want to double-check it is plugged in properly or that the battery has charged properly.

For wireless models also check your connection whether it is 4G or Wi-Fi as this can stop your camera from streaming if you have lost connection.

For hidden cameras with SD cards, make sure the memory is not full and reset the device. If the above does not work, check the spy cam manual or contact the manufacturer.
